Penelope Ward cresceu em Boston, nos EUA, e ganhou o coração de milhões de leitores com seus romances que são conceituados pelo The New York Times. Ela se tornou escritora de romances, muitos deles eróticos, após deixar a carreira de apresentadora de tv para se dedicar mais à família. Seus livros estiveram nas listas de mais vendidos dos jornais The New York Times e The Wall Street Journal.
Autora de Amante Britânico, Milionário Arrogante, Querido Vizinho e Amor Imenso, entre vários outros, a Penélope se dispôs a falar um pouco com a gente.

1 - Primeiramente, gostaria de perguntar se há alguma ligação entre Cretino Abusado, Metido de Terno e Gravata, Piloto Playboy, Milionário Arrogante, Amante Britânico e Sedutor de Nova Iorque?
Penelope: “Não há conexão entre as histórias reais ou os personagens. Elas são todas autônomas. A única coisa é... a cabra que aparece em Cretino Abusado, fez uma breve aparição nos outros livros, menos em Amante Britânico.”
2 - Como é trabalhar em parceria com outra autora? Nós costumamos dizer aqui que a sua amizade com a Vi Keeland é sensacional.
Penelope: “É muito divertido. Nós começamos como amigas e apenas decidimos escrever juntas porque nós pensamos que poderia ser agradável e uma experiência diferente. Nós não estávamos necessariamente esperando escrever mais de um livro juntas. Mas depois do primeiro (Cretino Abusado) ter sido muito bom, nós continuamos e agora temos mais de doze livros juntas. Na verdade, é muito fácil escrever com outra pessoa, porque você está fazendo metade do serviço e também começando a gostar de ler a história quando o outro autor se volta em seu papel. :) Escrever sozinho é muito mais solitário, com certeza.”
3 - Vimos recentemente que duas histórias sua e da Vi Keeland irão ganhar quickies na Passionflix e ficamos muito animadas e muito ansiosas pelo resultado final. Como foi para vocês esse processo?
Penelope: “Sim! Nós estamos muito animadas que essas histórias curtas estão indo ao ar esse mês de Dezembro. Foi um processo muito divertido. Infelizmente, nenhuma de nós era capaz de voar para fora da Califórnia para ver o filme, mas nós tivemos que aprovar o script que foi adaptado para nossa curta história de Natal e também tivemos que estar envolvidos no elenco. Passionflix é uma empresa maravilhosa e espero poder trabalhar com eles novamente no futuro.”
4 - Como foi para você se tornar escritora? Sempre foi um sonho?
Penelope: “Definitivamente não :-) Nunca imaginei que seria uma escritora e essa seria a minha carreira. Foi só na casa dos 30 anos que tentei pegar um computador e escrever qualquer coisa. Eu era uma leitora ávida de romance antes disso, mas assim que comecei a escrever, percebi que era algo que vinha facilmente e que eu realmente amava e quando as pessoas receberam bem meu primeiro livro, eu simplesmente continuei e de alguma forma essa se tornou uma carreira. Eu me considero muito sortuda por ter descoberto isso mais tarde na vida.”
5 - Como você lida com as críticas?
Penelope: “Bem, depois de mais de 30 livros e milhares de resenhas, você simplesmente não precisa prestar atenção em nada negativo e simplesmente deve seguir em frente. Não há nenhum propósito a levar nada a sério. Haverá pessoas que não gostarão dos meus livros e haverá pessoas que os amarão e é assim que as coisas são. Não vou dizer que as críticas negativas não me aborrecem, porque é natural que isso aconteça, mas eu acho que há uma certa dose de pele dura que você deve tentar ter neste negócio, porque você está colocando seu trabalho lá fora o tempo todo e nem todo mundo vai adorar. Nem todo mundo experimenta o mesmo livro da mesma maneira. É muito pessoal.”
6 - Nós falamos muito sobre adaptações literárias nas nossas redes sociais e eu sempre digo que seria um um sonho ver um livro seu ganhar vida. Como você se sente a respeito?
Penelope: “Eu absolutamente adoraria que um dos meus livros fosse transformado em um filme completo. Isso seria um sonho absolutamente meu e tenho esperança de que isso algum dia aconteça. Obrigada por querer ver meus livros na tela :) Acho que se eu pudesse escolher, adoraria ver Amor Imenso ou Credito Bastatdo, mas eu aceitaria qualquer livro transformado em filme!
7 - Você criou um personagem maravilhoso, o Dex, porém agora estamos iludidas e apaixonadas e ele não existe na vida real. Você costuma se apaixonar pelas suas criações?
Penelope: “Acho que uma parte de mim se apaixona por cada personagem que escrevo, mas eles não são de forma alguma baseados em pessoas reais. Acho que os personagens que escrevemos são fáceis de se apaixonar porque tentamos torná-los assim, mesmo que tenham falhas. Eu acho que se VOCÊ está se apaixonando por eles, então estamos fazendo nosso trabalho :-).”
8 - Em Amante Britânico, Bridget e Simon vivem com medo de assumir um relacionamento, no começo do livro, e quando eles fazem isso eu surtei de emoção, e eu gostei muito de como vocês levaram a história. Mas tenho uma curiosidade, o plot Twist me impressiona até hoje. Vocês já tinham isso planejado ou aconteceu conforme a história surgia? Penelope: “Normalmente, quando colocamos uma reviravolta em um livro, decidimos com antecedência. Portanto, as principais coisas que discutimos antes de começar a escrever seriam a direção geral da história e a reviravolta. Então, sim, planejamos colocar isso na história desde o início :-).”
9 - Falando em plot Twist, eu fiquei muito surpresa na metade de Cretino Abusado, por conta do que aconteceu com o Chance e ele ficou lá em cima no meu conceito, mas ficava muito ansiosa pois a Aubrey demorou a perdoa-lo. É tenso para vocês escrever momentos assim ou acontece naturalmente?
Penelope: “Nós definitivamente sabíamos o que iria acontecer nessa história também. Sempre queremos surpreender o leitor de alguma forma, por isso, antes de começar a escrever, conhecemos a grande reviravolta. São todas as pequenas coisas que não planejamos necessariamente, como as conversas específicas e os lugares que elas vão... Coisas assim vêm até nós conforme avançamos.”
10 - O amor entre Carter e Kendall é bem nítido já nas primeiras páginas do livro, porém essa história fugiu de tudo o que eu já estava acostumada a ler. Amo o fato de vocês sempre estarem deixando bem claro, em seus livros, que tem que haver respeito dentro de uma relação, ela tenha começado ou não. Você acha que isso pode, de alguma forma, influenciar seus leitores?
Penelope: “Acho que mais do que influenciar um leitor, os leitores podem se relacionar com certas coisas que os personagens fazem e que os lembram de coisas de suas próprias vidas. Tento garantir que os personagens aprendam lições ao longo de cada história com as quais as pessoas possam se identificar, mesmo que os personagens não sejam reais, as situações que eles vivenciam são coisas muito reais que as pessoas podem aplicar a si mesmas e se consolar em saber que não estão sozinhas em sentir certas coisas.”
11 - Ainda estou com Sedutor em Nova Iorque na minha estante, e estou super ansiosa para ler porque já sei que irei amar. Esse é o seu mais novo livro para mim, mas você está trabalhando em algo no momento e quer compartilhar com nós?
Penelope: “Temos mais um livro escrito para ser lançado nos EUA em 2021. No momento, estamos fazendo uma pequena pausa na redação, mas esperamos criar algo novo para mais tarde em 2021/2022. Existem vários livros que ainda não foram lançados no Brasil... Então, espero que você também os leia.”
12 - Segundo o The New York Times, Amor Imenso foi um dos seus best seller mais vendidos de 2016. A curiosidade é: você viveria na mesma casa que Justin ou tentaria resistir aos desejos da vovó?
Penelope: “Sim, aquele livro atingiu o número dois na lista de bestsellers do The New York Times aqui nos EUA :-) ele era muito popular quando foi lançado em 2016. A casa que eu criei naquela história era exclusivamente da minha imaginação, no entanto, a história se passa em Newport, Rhode Island, que é um lugar lindo que não fica muito longe de onde eu moro. Então, fui capaz de visualizar tudo naquela história com muita clareza. Tive uma avó maravilhosa e sempre segui seus conselhos até ela morrer em 2012. Adoro escrever histórias de avós... Infelizmente, a avó nessa história havia falecido antes de a história começar, mas ela deixou sua marca ao tentar trazer os dois personagens juntos, forçando-os a compartilhar uma casa.”
13 - Em Mack Daddy, você retratou um homem que reencontrou uma antiga paixão e tentou reconquista-la. Foi retratado sobre superação e segundas chances. Escrever sobre temas assim exigem um grau de pesquisa maior ou é natural?
Penelope: “Escrever um romance de segundas chances é muito divertido, porque você consegue incorporar elementos do passado e do presente deles. Nesse sentido, é sempre uma história um pouco mais complicada, porque você tem que familiarizar o leitor com sua história, bem como com sua situação atual, mas é um dos meus tipos favoritos de histórias para escrever.”
14 - Em Piloto Playboy tem algumas cenas que se passam aqui no Brasil, você já visitou ou já pensou em nos visitar?
Penélope: “Infelizmente, nunca estive no Brasil, mas o país é muito importante para mim, pois tenho muitos parentes na região de São Paulo. Não sou brasileira... mas muitos da minha família acabaram migrando para lá.”
15 - Para finalizar, tem alguma mensagem que você queira deixar para as pessoas?
Penelope: “Só que eu aprecio muito meus leitores no Brasil e o fato de meus livros poderem ser traduzidos para o português e publicados no Brasil é um sonho maravilhoso que se tornou realidade. Obrigada por toda a animação que sempre vejo nas redes sociais e obrigada por continuar a me apoiar e por ler meus livros! Amo todos vocês e espero que todos estejam seguros.❤️

1 - First of all, I'd like to ask you if there is a connection between Cocky Bastard, Stuck up Suit, Playboy Pilot, Mister Moneybags, British Bedmate and Park Avenue Player? There is no connection between the actual stories or characters. They are all standalones. The only thing is...the goat that appears in Cocky Bastard makes a brief cameo in the other books, but not in British Bedmate. 2 - How is work with another author? We used to say between ourselves that your friendship with Vi Keeland it's amazing. It’s a lot of fun! We started out as friends and only decided to write together because we thought it might be enjoyable and a different experience. We weren’t even necessarily expecting to write more than one book together. But after the first one (Cocky Bastard) did really well, we continued and now have over a dozen books together. It’s actually a lot easier writing with someone else because you’re doing half the work and also getting to enjoy reading the story somewhat when the other author turns in her part. :) Writing alone is much lonelier for sure. 3 - Recently, we saw that two stories of you and Keeland will be quickies on Passionflix and we get so happy and excited for the final result. How was for you this process? Yes! We are very excited that those short stories are going to be airing this month… December. It was a very fun process. Neither of us were able to fly out to California to see the filming unfortunately, but we got to approve the script that was adapted from our Christmas short stories and also got to be involved in the casting :-) Passionflix is an amazing company and I hope to work with them again in the future. 4 - How was for you become a writter? Was it always a dream? Definitely not :-) I never imagined that I would be a writer and that would be my career. It wasn’t until my mid 30s that I even tried to pick up a computer and write anything. I was an avid romance reader before that. But once I started writing, I realized that it was something that came quite easily and that I really loved and when people received my first book well, I just kept going and it somehow turned into a career. I consider myself very lucky for having discovered this later in life. 5 - How do you deal with bad comments? Well after over 30 books and thousands of reviews, you have to just not pay to close attention to anything negative and just move on. It doesn’t serve any purpose to take anything to heart. There are going to be people that dislike my books and there are going to be people that love them and that’s just the way it is. I’m not going to say that negative reviews don’t upset me, because it’s natural that they would. But I think there’s a certain amount of thick skin you have to try to have in this business because you’re putting your work out there all of the time and not everyone’s going to love it. Not everyone experiences the same book the same way. It's very personal. 6 - We talking about literary adaptations in our social media and I say that would be a dream your book come to life. How do you feel about it? I would absolutely love one of my books to be made into a full length movie. That would be an absolute dream of mine and I’m hopeful that it will happen someday. Thank you for wanting to see my books on the screen :) I think if I could choose, I would love to see RoomHate or Cocky Bastard! But I would take any book being made into a movie! 7 - You created an amazing character Dex, but now we are deluded and in love, however he doesn’t exist. Did you used to falling in love for your creations? I think a part of me falls in love with every character I write, but they are in no way based on real people. I think the characters we write are easy to fall in love with because we try to make them that way, even if they are not without flaws. I think that if YOU are falling in love with them, then we are doing our job :-) 8 - In British Bedmate, Bridget and Simon has that fear to show up their relationship, in the beginning of the book and when they finally do it, I freaked out in a good way and I liked very much how you take that story. But I have the curiosity, the plot twist impressed me until now. Have you been planned or just happened as the story coming to your mind? Usually when we put a twist in a book, we decide ahead of time. So the main things we discuss before we start writing would be the general direction of the story and the twist. So yes we did plan to put that in the story from the beginning :-) 9 - By the way, I get very surprised in the half of Cocky Bastard, for what happen with Chance and he gets so high in my concept but I felt very impatient, because Audrey take so long to forgive him. Is it a cliff for you writing these moments or it just naturally happen? We definitely knew what was going to happen in that story as well. We always want to surprise the reader in some way, so before we start writing we know the big twist. It’s all of the little things that we don’t necessarily plan, like the specific conversations, and the places they go… Things like that come to us as we go along.
10 - The love between Carter and Kendall is very expressive in the first pages, but this story it was far way for all I have ever been readed. I love the fact you always make it clear that in a relationship it has to be respect. Do you think, somehow those things might to influence your readers?
I think more than influencing a reader, readers can relate to certain things that characters do and that remind them of things in their own life. I try to make sure that the characters learn lessons throughout each story that people can relate to. Even though the characters are not real, the situations that they experience are very real types of things that people hopefully can apply to themselves and take some comfort in knowing that they are not alone in feeling certain things.
11 - I’m still with Park Avenue Player on my bookshelf, and I’m very excited to read because I know I’ll love. It’s your newest book to me but are you working in something? If your answer is yes, can you share with us?
We have one more book written to come out in the US in 2021. We are taking a short break from writing at the moment but hope to put together something new for later in 2021/2022. There are several books though that have not come out yet in Brazil… So hopefully you’ll get to read those as well :-)
12 - According to New York Times, “Roomhate” was one of the best-sellers in 2016. The question is: Did you live in the Justin’s same house or would you try to resist to the advices of your grandma?
Yes that book hit number two on the New York Times bestseller list here in the US :-) it was very popular when it released in 2016. The house that I created in that story was solely from my imagination, however the story is set in Newport Rhode Island which is a beautiful place that is actually not too far from where I live. So I was able to visualize everything in that story very clearly. I had a wonderful grandmother and I always followed her advice until she died in 2012. I love writing grandmothers into stories… Unfortunately the grandmother in that story had passed away before the story started, but she left her mark in trying to bring the two characters together by forcing them to share a house.
13 - In Mack Daddy, you retracted a man who met an old love and try to get back her. It was about overcomings and second chances, write about those topics require another level of research or its natural?
Writing Second Chance Romance is a lot of fun because you get to incorporate elements of their past and their present. In that sense, it’s always a little bit more of a complicated story because you have to familiarize the reader with their history as well as their current situation. But it’s one of my favorite types of stories to write.
14 - In Playboy Pilot has some scenes, here in Brazil. Have you visited or think to visit us some day?
Unfortunately, I have never been to Brazil, but the country is very close to my heart as I have a lot of relatives in the Sao Paolo area. I am not Brazilian… But a lot of my family ended up migrating there.
15 - For finish, did you have any message for the people?
Just that I appreciate my readers in Brazil so much and the fact that my books are able to be translated into Portuguese and published in Brazil is a wonderful dream come true.
